area faq

In Puerto Viejo and the surrounding area the most popular way to get around is by bicycle. It is generally safe to bike around town and the surrounding area. We just advise you to be cautious at night time. Using the reflective gear provided and biking together with someone else is always a good option.

The climate remains relatively consistent all year round hovering around 30°C (86°F) during the day and drops to around 21°C (70°F) at night. Its a rainforest, so expect some rain! But like any tropical climate the sun can come out around 10 mins after a heavy downpour.

Dry Season is usually from February – May  and again from September – November. However, it’s not a given. Some years rain more than others. 2020 has been a dry year so far!

We highly recommend Puerto Pirata or Grow, which are location right next door to each other, with a beautiful scenic view of the bay, the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

Another favorite of ours to watch the sunset is Salsa Brava, where you can drink some natural teas, or cocktail fusions, watch the surfers surf the famous Salsa Brava wave all the while enjoying some reggae roots music and a beautiful view of the bay.

For Caribbean food, we recommend Soda Lidia’s Place, hidden in the back of town on Avenida 67. The ‘Take it Easy’ food truck in Cocles is an absolute must, only on weekends, Rasta Cris cooks delicious Caribbean food.

You can visit Finca La Isla Botanical Garden in Playa Negra to see all the tropical flora and fauna the area has to offer. They also offer chocolate tours.

We highly recommend Finca Two Waters, it’s a scenic lookout point where you can see the ocean from Cahuita to Manzanillo. You are so high up that you see Toucans flying at eye level, spot monkeys in the trees. You can also go from the lookout point on a mini jungle hike to the waterfall and take a cool dip.

A day trip to Cahuita is a must, you visit the Cahuita National Park, take a walk through it and you will see a lot of nature and animals in their natural habitat. Stop into town and go to Delrita Patty, they serve traditional Caribbean pies with meat and sweet plantain or pineapple options. Ask for their famous Hiel drink also.

Puerto Viejo and the surrounding area offers a variety of accommodation options to suit every budget. From 5 star hotels and Villas, to nice and comfortable 3 star hotels cabinas and fancy hostels.

For a unique experience, we reccommend Perezoso Villa and The Dome, both located in Playa Negra and both equally charming and set in a lush tropical rainforest setting.

If you are after an up market hostel vibe with private rooms in the center of town, we highly recommend El Clan Hostel.

If you would like some nice photos while travelling in Puerto Viejo, We recommend Elena De Luca. Check out her folio, and contact her for a quote. She specializes in portrait sessions and art direction if you’d like to do an artistic portrait rather than a traditional one.
